ITINERARY:
JOURNAL ENTRY:
Drove to St. Andrews to view the castle and cathedral. Took a bit to find parking, but we persevered. A spot opened on the right side of the street and we were wondering how to turn around to get into it. There was an opening on the left side to do this, but duh, it was another parking spot. We grabbed it. Ha!
Walked through town to find the visitors center and get a map. Then toured the ruins of the St. Andrews Cathedral. They were quite impressive in size. Must have been a sight to see when it was in its glory.
Then we walked to the castle. The ruins weren't much to look at, but there were some cool underground mines that were used to try and penetrate the castle.
The religious people living in the castle were living in luxury, while everyone else had to struggle to survive. The people weren't happy. They murdered Cardinal Beaton and took over the castle.
Walked back to town and ate at Zizzi's. Phil had pizza. Then walked back to the cathedral and climbed the 102 step spiral staircase of St. Rule's Tower. It had beautiful views of St. Andrews.
Walked back to town and had ice cream at the World Famous "Jannettas". The line was long, but went pretty quick. They had 52 flavors to choose from. On each code or dish they gave you a large edible wafer with their name on it. Ice cream was good, but nothing out of the ordinary. Assume it was famous because most stores and truck vendors only had 3-4 flavors to pick from.
Drove back, but took a slight detour to see St. Andrews Golf Course. Couldn't see too much, but got some pictures of the hotel.
